Once I created the setting of Seron,I wanted to make it feel alive, and real. I needed to put people in it.
My main concern was to not make either Seron or Calvary the ‘bad guys’. It seemed too simplistic, and cliché to either have Calvary be filled with lawless bandits, or Seron filled with an uncaring upper class.
Life seems so much more complicated than that. Nobody views themselves as bad guys; people tend to justify their actions, even bad ones, as a necessary evil, or a means to an end.
So, is it possible that an evil ruling class were keeping a balance for a specific purpose? Is it possible lawless bandits rebelled against a system, or authority, because it was unfair or uncaring?
I also thought of other questions, like; if there was prison the size of a city, with a mixed population, would it be possible they would have families? Could innocent people be born, and live, in a place designed for the guilty?
Questions like this helped me try to shape the world, and the characters who lived in it. I hope it shows when the issues are released.
