Steelkilt Media Festival 2021

I came up with idea for Seron back in 2014, and over that time I have written and edited the first six issues. It hasn’t taken me almost eight years to do that, but at the time of writing, I still don’t have any artwork to show you.

As an unpublished comic book writer, it’s hard to stand out and feel noticed. I can’t send you a few jpegs to show my range of work, and nobody seems particularly excited to sit down with a script that’s far longer than the final comic book would be.

Even when you look at making submissions to publishers, they tend to want at least five pages of finished art with the submission. If you work full time, and are trying to self-fund your passion project, it can be incredibly difficult to do.

This is where I really saw the uniqueness of the Steelkilt Media Festival. It’s a comic book festival that celebrates the scripts of unpublished comics. It doesn’t matter if this is the first script you have ever written, or if you have had other works published. Provided the scripts you have submitted have not been published, you can take part.

Incidentally, Seron is the first comic script I have ever written, and as it has lived in my head for the better part of a decade, it was equal parts exciting and terrifying to submit to a competition. I’m really proud to say that I made it as a finalist in my category (Best single issue unproduced comic book script (18-24 pages)), and I’m glad I took the gamble on myself to submit Seron.

Equally, I’m proud of everyone for taking the same risk with their own projects. To all the winners, honourable mentions, finalists and other participants: Well done! I cannot wait to see the work you produce!

Please, if you have supported Seron, or any independent comics, take a look at the Steelkilt Media Festival!
